What does it take to be a perfumer?
You can find almost any product with a scented version, but ever wonder where one becomes a “perfumer?” Where one develops the skills to notably create the perfumes that we love? One of these places is the Givaudan Perfumery School located near Paris, France. Here, students are primed to be great “noses” and recognize the creation of a successful fragrance.
Many famous perfumers have passed through this school since it’s opening in 1946 and it continues to “hone noses” of current students and “are expected to master 500 of [1,300 raw materials] substances ‘like the letters of the alphabet.’” However, emphasis is placed on invention, not memorization.

What does space smell like?

Ever wonder what space smells like? Well astronauts have started talking of this long kept secret, and it’s anything but roses. An odd and distinctive scent, astronauts have described space to smell of ”seared steak,” ”hot metal,” and “welding fumes.” Definitely a description different from any perfume I have tried!
NASA has commissioned Steve Pearce, a scent chemist, to recreate the scent of “space” for training purposes. Pearce, known for creating “Impossible Smells”, is finding this task difficult (dare say impossible?).
Astronaut Don Pettit describes his out-of-this-world fragrance experience as:
It is definitely not the olfactory equivalent to describing the palette sensations of some new food as “tastes like chicken.” The best description I can come up with is metallic; a rather pleasant sweet metallic sensation. It reminded me of my college summers where I labored for many hours with an arc welding torch repairing heavy equipment for a small logging outfit. It reminded me of pleasant sweet smelling welding fumes. That is the smell of space.
So when the scent of space hits the shelves, who’s lining up to buy it?
